Effects of Gonads on Liver Damage by Carbon Tetrachloride

Abstract
Effects of gonadectomy or female sew hormones on the hepatic cell damage and cirrhotic changes of the liver in adult rabbits induced by the administration of carbon tetrachloride- were studied histopathologically with the followingconclusions.
1. The body weight was decreased in the entire experimental groups. The loss in body weight was greater in male rabbits than in f~ male ones. The differences in the loss of body weight between the orchidectomized and oophorectomized groups were not appreciable. The administration of either estrogen or progesteron tended to lesion the loss of body weight, the former showing a stronger effect than the latter.
2. Hepatic cell damage and the ensuing cirrhosis following the administration of carbon z~trachloride were more striking in ma1_e rabbitsthan in female.
3. Orc:hidectomy produced no significant effects on hepatic damage due to carbon tetrachloride whereas oophorectomy aggravated the damage.
4. ThE; administration of female ses hormones such as estrogen and progesterone reduced hepatic damage due to carbon tetrachloride. No significant defference in the effect was noted between these two hormones.
